Electrical maintenance: Safety
There are many reasons for being vigilant with electrical maintenance. Most obviously it is a huge safety issue. Faulty electrical goods and wiring can cause fires and even death. But it is also true that electrical failures due to poor maintenance can be plain inconvenient. Due to the dangers involved with electrical work, a qualified electrician must always be used. Knowing when to get wiring checked and what to look for may save your life or at least avoid expensive damage from faulty wiring.
Electrical maintenance: Safety issues
Early signs that you may need some work done include flickering lights, power boards being tripped, tingles or 'zaps' from electrical equipment and obviously frayed lines. Immediate remedial action is indicated if you have any suspicion at all that electrical equipment and circuits may be needing maintenance, and a pro active approach can save you big money or even save your life. Older homes should simply be checked regularly as a matter of course, and complete rewiring may be required.
If you notice any of these signs, or any other problems with electrical appliances or wiring, enlist the services of a qualified electrician to source and rectify the problem safely.
Electrical appliances: Problems
There are several reasons for problems with electrical safety, of wiring and of appliances. These include:
- Safety of appliances may be compromised over time as dust and dirt cause overheating and damage to equipment
- Equipment may vibrate during operation and parts loosen
- Insulation may fail due to age and wear, exposing the current carrying wires, and electrocuting anyone who comes into contact with them
- Lack of proper maintenance can result in a dangerous appliance
- Immediately discard any appliance which is unsafe, by cutting off the cord before disposing of it
Regularly check leads and switches on all appliances, and wiring in your home for signs of wear or failure, particularly around insulation.
Maintaining and regularly checking electrical equipment may be the most important thing you can do to protect your safety in the home and workplace. Any suspect equipment or wiring should be immediately put out of use and checked by a licensed electrician.
